Ye Olde Military Depot?

I think that guy is joking. Getting those could set you up for some serious federal charges.

Wal-Mart prices won't stay low much longer. Much of this stuff is a great investment now. Better to buy it all now then think you can trade your shiny metal for it after tshtf.

:applause_ Good post Dissipate!

but if TSHTF hard enough, raids on those depots will be at the top list of priority for groups of people who are serious about survival and well coordinated. that is why everybody is placing their own kind in the US military now even if nobody really much likes the foreign adventures.

Just like Iraq. We toppled the government and everybody went straight for the arms depots. We were running around looking for nonexistent WMDs and failed to "secure the peace." This Paul Bremer guy did more of the same as Commissar of Iraq or whatever his title was.

Did mountain men pack this much stuff?
Soon, both Skagway and Dyea were bustling tent cities as bombastic headlines of the gold rush in the contiguous United States spurred men around the country to leave their jobs and family and gain passage up the Inside Passage to Skagway. However, soon it became apparent that many of the prospectors who chose the Chilkoot simply weren't going to survive the arduous terrain and demanding weather, so Canada's North West Mounted Police (now the Royal Canadian Mounted Police) required one ton of gear (enough to supply a prospector for one year) as a requisite for entrance to the B.C. side of the trail. A suggested list of gear from an era-publication[1] is below:
  • 150 lb. bacon
  • 400 lb. flour
  • 25 lb. rolled oats
  • 125 lb. beans
  • 10 lb. tea
  • 10 lb. coffee
  • 25 lb. sugar
  • 25 lb. dried onions
  • 2 lb. dried onions
  • 15 lb. salt
  • 1 lb. pepper
  • 75 lb. dried fruits
  • 8 lb. baking powder
  • 2 lb. soda
  • 1/2 lb. evaporated vinegar
  • 12 oz. compressed soup
  • 1 can mustard
  • 1 tin matches (for four men)
  • Stove for four men
  • Gold pan for each
  • Set granite buckets
  • Large bucket
  • Knife, fork, spoon, cup, and plate
  • Frying pan
  • Coffee and teapot
  • Scythe stone
  • Two picks and one shovel
  • One whipsaw
  • Pack strap
  • Two axes for four men and one extra handle
  • Six 8 inch files and two taper files for the party
  • Draw knife, brace and bits, jack plane, and hammer for party
  • 200 feet three-eights-inch rope
  • 8 lb. of pitch and 5 lb. of oakum for four men
  • Nails, five lbs. each of 6,8,10 and 12 penny, for four men
  • Tent, 10 x 12 feet for four men
  • Canvas for wrapping
  • Two oil blankets to each boat
  • 5 yards of mosquito netting for each man
  • 3 suits of heavy underwear
  • 1 heavy mackinaw coat
  • 2 pairs heavy machinaw trousers
  • 1 heavy rubber-lined coat
  • 1 doz heavy wool socks
  • 1/2 doz heavy wool mittens
  • 2 heavy overshirts
  • 2 pairs heavy snagproof rubber boots
  • 2 pairs shoes
  • 4 pairs blankets (for two men)
  • 4 towels
  • 2 pairs overalls
  • 1 suit oil clothing
  • Several changes of summer clothing
  • Small assortment of medicines
This amounted to the fabled "ton of gear" and prospectors ferried the gear from campsites along the trail, slowly moving closer to the headwaters of the Yukon. With all the equipment and supplies being transported, alternative methods, especially those with a little supplemental income, sprouted up. Many purchased pack animals, although that method was more commonly used on the rival White Pass, but a primary and very profitable enterprise came from the Tlingit Indians, the formerly exclusive users of the trail. They hired gear on a per pound rate from campsite to campsite however even their packing service grew antiquated.

Anyone else reading the comments to the guy's blog post and thinking about how F'in stupid people are? I don't even know if I'll bother buying the stuff, when SHTF, I'm sure everyone will have at least one item I want. After reading these comments, I figure I'll just go take it, and won't feel bad about it. :banghead:

And if anyone resists, I'm doing the world a favor. Someone needs to tend to the gene pool, its long past due for a good skimming.

Something else I would add to the list. Sewing needles, thread, fabric (for patching or making new clothes), yarn, knitting and crochet needles. If you have a generator, you could power a sewing machine.

Damn near forever--but it will evaporate if it isn't sealed, and is as explosively flammable as gasoline.

I often hear from the teetotalers that they don't need liquor. If you look at a lot of cold remedies you'll find alcohol as a main ingredient. It isn't because drunkeness is a curative--it's because alcohol is a great solvent for a lot of herbs and other drugs. Tinctures need strong alcohol to draw out the active ingredients.

Oh, sure, half your neighbors will be self-taught brewers within a year, but are you going to risk your life by ingesting it? The good ones will show themselves eventually, and the bad ones strung up, but if you're looking at an abscessed tooth and you need to extract it without the laudanum...

I purchased a whole buttload of paper when Wal-Mart had the back to school sale: notebooks for $0,10/70 pages and $0,30/150 pages. They were out the first time, and they were also out when I left next time :D

It would also be wise stock up on any prescription medicine, even if it requires tapping into the black market.

No, its not a good idea to violate the law and possibly end up in jail, for the ephemeral possibility of "collapse." Thats like trading the bird of your freedom in your hand, for the possibility of a two in the bush, maybe, on the outside chance you'll really need them.

The medicines you need are the ones you take and you can just siphon off a supply, but you got to rotate that too.

Here is another thing, you could always try asking your doctor. Say, you could even try making friends with your doctor, and figuring out where he lives, so you got a supply if tshtf. Doctors and nurses are major assets in your "survival network."

If you are talking about a disruption of more than a month in pharmaceuticals your are talking about something past the usual SHTF scenarios, like, headed on its way to TEOTWAWKI. If you are figgerin you need more than a month laid back than you are thinking Mad Max because a lot of pharmaceutical production is leaner than it used to be because of JIT inventory practices, or so I hear. Even in the Great Depression doctors were working. You are thinking collapse if you think you need more than a month of pharmaceuticals.

Btw, the same principle applies to all destructive devices and class III weapons. Dont break the law. If it's a SHTF scenario you dont really need that stuff, and if it's way past that on the way to collapse, you'll figure out how to grab that stuff easy enough.

That's all good stuff to have, but 'disappear first' ?

Say a guy is looting a store in a national emergency and he can only carry one big item. I'd think he'd grab food for his family before he'd grab #3, a portable toilet.

I'd say food of any kind, guns and ammo, cig's and alcohol, water. Water is the most important but for most people would be down the list.

Right. Any ol' bush, tree, ditch or clump of grass will do.

Food and water come first.
